I have listed a few treats to get “bootiful” skin this October. Then there are trick ingredients to avoid. No one wants scary skin!
Treat One
Repairing ingredients improve cell damage from free radicals that lead to fine lines, wrinkles and sun spots, age spots or hyperpigmentation
-
Vitamin C or ascorbic acid is one of the most potent antioxidants. It is collagen stimulating, photo-protective and brightening.
-
Vitamin E or tocopherol is another antioxidant that protects the lipids in the skin, which decreases fine lines.
-
Green tea is a skin conditioning agent and UV absorber.
-
Arbutin evens skin tone.
Trick – avoid BHA (suspected endocrine disruptors and may cause cancer), and BHT (may be linked to breathing and lung impairment).
Treat Two
Rejuvenating ingredients promote cell turnover, collagen production.
-
Evening Primrose oil is an emollient that increases suppleness.
-
Frankincense essential oil smooths and reduces fine lines.
-
Mineral peptides improves tone and texture.
-
Pomegranate oil strengthens the skin’s barrier.
-
Rosehip oil increases collagen and elastin production.
Trick – avoid RetinA, retinols or retinyl palmitate. These ingredients are photo-sensitizers, and can cause your skin to burn quicker than normal.
Treat Three
All skin types need hydrate to stay supple, moist and vibrant.
-
Hyaluronic acid is the best hydrating ingredient. It holds its’ weight in water 1000 times.
-
Glycerin (plant based) is an emollient that binds water to the skin.
-
Sorbitol prevents moisture loss.
-
Orange flower essential oil replenishes moisture.
-
Rose essential oil nourishes dry skin.
Trick – avoid Mineral oil, liquid paraffin, petrolatum, silicones. All of these ingredients occlude the skin or don’t allow the skin to breathe, and can clog pores.
Treat Four
Sun protection is so important to reduce free radical damage and aging. Apply every morning!
The following are physical sunscreen ingredients that protect immediately. Both UVA and UVB rays are reflected off the skin when using zinc or titanium.
-
Zinc oxide protect against all of the UVB rays and the majority of the UVA rays.
-
Titanium dioxide is the next best ingredient for sun protection.
Trick – avoid oxybenzone. It is highly toxic (per www.ewg.org).
